Alan Lomax, legendary collector of folk music who was the first to record artist such as Leadbelly, Muddy Waters, and Son House passed away Friday July 19 in Sarasota, Florida. Along with his father John, Lomax traveled the United States collecting “America’s music” for the Library of Congress recordings.
www.culturalequity.orgMany of these recordings were done with a bulky mobile recording machine carried throughout the country in the Lomax’s car. Without these recordings, many voices and forms of music may have gone unnoticed. Alan Lomax’s contribution to the preservation of the blues is considerable … and the Delta Blues Museum is saddened by his passing… but thankful that so many voices were heard because of his work.
